CARAMOAN ISLANDS ON MY SECOND VISIT: WHAT HAPPENED?

Location: Municipality of Caramoan, Camarines Sur, Bicol Region, Philippines

The picturesque sprawling green tropical island of Guinahoan

This is my second time to be in Caramoan. My first time was wayback April 9-12. 2009. It was not a good experience because the boatman we hired then had deceived us and we only visited two destinations, namely: Lahos Island and Hunongan Cove. We only had an hour in Lahos then and we were dropped in Hunongan Cove, a very rocky coastline inhabited with thousands of starfish. We waited there from 12:20 noon and we were picked up at around 6:00 P.M. by the boatman where we missed our lunch because the boatman told us that there was no need to get our things out from the boat since they will be back in a short while. However, we just find out that they were servicing another group of guests and so we ended up in a police station for a blotter and it was Good Friday then. The police officers (except for the chief of police who was drunk had intimidated us) demanded that we should not pay. The whole family of the boat operator confronted us because at the port, I was shouting in anger with what had happened. Thus, when I hear the word Caramoan, I am traumatized. Another consolation was being able to visit the shrine Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, Queen of Peace.

Scenery in our long drive along the Caramoan Peninsula

This was what also happened during my second time, the package was good for five islands but we only had three because they told us that the two islands were being used for the filming of a Survivor Show where I forgot the name of the country. I learned that this is always their style. Deceiving the guests of the number of islands of the island hopping package but eventually, they will tell you, the other islands are not available because of Survivor Show filming. But anyway, this second time was more enjoyable than the first.

Guests being welcomed in the Caramoan town proper

Our trip package was a land travel of 19 hours from Mandaluyong City via Pan-Philippine Highway or AH26 for 510 kilometers. Driving along the Caramoan peninsula was such a long and endless zigzag-road drive. The first time I went there, we made use of the Sabang Port boarding a big boat going to Guijalo Port but this time, all land travel. I find the former to be a comfortable option than have the long drive along Caramoan Peninsula.

The 400-year old red brick church of Saint Michael The Archangel in Caramoan town built in 1619

Saint Michael The Archangel was our first stop in the town of Caramoan which is now a mother parish of four parishes: Sacred Heart Parish in Garchitorena, St. Dominic of Guzman Parish in Tabgon, Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage in Guijalo, and St. Anthony of Padua in Bikal.

Our accommodation at Airus Xander Front Beach Resort

As a background, Caramoan is a second class municipality in the province of Camarines Sur, Philippines. It is located at the tip of the Caramoan Peninsula, a rugged place of land extending into the waters of the Maqueda Channel on the north and east and Lagonoy Gulf on the south. The municipality covers approximately 277.41 square kilometers (107.11 sq mi) consisting of 49 barangays with approximately 71 kilometers (44 mi) of irregular coastline surrounded by the vast ocean, bay, seas and swamps. It is approximately 500 kilometers (310 mi) from Metro Manila; 95 kilometers (59 mi) from the municipality of Pili, where the seat of the provincial government and the Naga Domestic Airport are located; and 110 kilometers (68 mi) east from Naga City, the heart of Bicol.

The inviting coastline fronting our accommodation

We had such an excellent accommodation since its location was on the mouth of Sohoton River where it meets the Paniman Bay in Barangay Paniman and guests have the option to have water fun activities either in the river or beach front. It is just a few steps from our comfortable accommodation.

Ready to plunge on the beach while waiting for my companions

Here are some information you should know about Airus Xander Front Beach Resort. Book now!

There is so much to see on the neighborhood of the resort. You have so many options but we booked for the best accommodation we thought could give us the assured comfort we need.

Aha! You want a comfortable rest on one of the resorts' hammocks with quite a refreshing backdrop?

After our late sumptuous lunch, we readied ourselves for an exciting island hopping. The scene was quite dragging. We cannot find our boatman. Our tour guide was in search of him. We did not bother being exposed to the summer heat. What we want was to start the island hopping adventure.

This is our first island destination: Matukad Island

This island has prominent tall limestone cliff and unique formation with white sand beach (not as powdery as Boracay's but offers the same beach experience). It has a mystery lagoon that is believed by locals to be enchanted. Its aquamarine blue waters is just irresistible. You can not say no for swimming. I can see some guests having scuba diving and snorkeling.

There is a 360-degree scenery from a rock cliff climbing

Rock cliff climbing may not be good for kids or for those with weak foot work as there are some loose rocks on it. But mind you, the view from atop is quite rewarding. You can see the aerial view of the fascinating island.

There is always increasing crowd during weekends for beach goers

The beach line of the island can accommodate the most of more than a thousand guests. Staying overnight is not encouraged for it is a part of the municipal ordinance to maintain the cleanliness of the island.

Its aerial view gives you an idea on how many guests can be accommodated

After Matukad Island, we headed to Lahos Island and when we were just a kilometer away, our boat changed direction. The boatman was talking to somebody and when he was done, he told us that we cannot dock in Lahos Island because there is a filming of a Survivor show of one foreign country. It was disappointing. They could have informed us earlier. And so, our boatman brought us to a beach which I forgot the name. We also enjoyed the place. We played with the smashing waves. Quite a different experience for beginners.

A beach in lieu of Lahos Island not in our original itinerary

We were thrilled for the second day island hopping but we did not know where our destination was because there was a change in destination island. The boat travel was 1 hour and 15 minutes.

We ended up docking in Guinahoan island's port

The said island was in contrast different from the islands we visited with tall limestone rock formations. Guinahoan is an inhabited island with small community. It features rolling green hills resembling to that of the Marlboro country of Batanes though here cogon are tall in comparison with Batanes which are purely flat carabao grass.

A minor ascent from the port heading to the lighthouse

From the island's port, guests are greeted by the friendly locals mostly kids. There is a makeshift store which also sells halo-halo and buco. From that point, an trek ascent of approximately 15-20 minutes to reach the lighthouse.

Some cattle are raised by the locals as part of their livelihood

Nipa huts as shades from burning hot sun

It was very hot but everybody was amazed of the place and they rather made themselves busy for some pictorials. There was a 360-degree view of the neighboring blue seas, skies and islands at a distance.

The lighthouse in complete isolation

As I can see the lighthouse was not functional and in fact, you can see it in the above photo. Unlike other lighthouses that I visited in some parts of the country, this one is simply erected with no other annexed structures like that of Cape Bojeador of Ilocos Norte, Cape Bolinao of Pangasinan and Capones Lighthouse of Zambales.

Such a rewarding scenery from the island's lighthouse

One last glimpse of the island's vast expanse

We regrouped again at the port and we headed towards the other end of the island which is the Liwa white beach. It was very hot but the clear sea waters with very transparent sea bed was very inviting for a swim.

Guinahoan Liwa's white beach

The boat travel was around 20 minutes and presto! we ended up docking at a pristine beach typical of a tropical beach grown with "lambayong" in a Waray dialect.

The nipa cottages at Liwa beach that serve as the only shade for us

We were actually self-contained with food for lunch. Our boatmen helped us to cook our food including the grilled fish of fresh catch we bought from the port. Some had their swimming while waiting for the food to be served.

The captured scenery from the nipa hut with the backdrop of another distant island

After lunch, we had swimming in reckless abandon from the hot sun's exposure. We enjoyed every minute of our stay in the beach. After all, this might be just the first and last that we will be here.

It was still early in the afternoon when we left the place and next destination was in a snorkel park of Sabitang Laya. It was a 40-minute boat travel from Liwa Beach.

Docked boats while guests are having snorkel

We stayed in this place for an hour. It was shallow but corals are sharp and so it was not safe to walk over the corals but rather swim and enjoy snorkel. The boatmen advised us not to step on the corals as they will die.

Obviously, I am not a fan of snorkel but I was there for a pictorial

The night that followed was memorable as we were served with a sumptuous dinner of seafoods and barbecue. Most importantly, we had a soundly and comfortable sleep in our airconditioned rooms.

An endless view of the countryside

The following day was our departure from a worthwhile experience and headed back from a picturesque countryside. From time to time, we disembark from our service vans to have a picture taking.

A viewdeck from the Municipality of Presentacion showcasing Mount Mayon

The long trip back to Manila was again a long one but it was not boring at all because we had a quick tour in Camsur Watersports Complex in Pili and Naga City, both cities of Camarines Sur.

How I wish that I can visit other beautiful islands of Caramoan including: Cotivas, Minalahos, Cagbanilad and Malarad and to experience the Manlawi Sandbar.

HOW TO GET THERE

If you opt not to avail of a travel package, the following are your options considering that you are coming from Manila:

1. Several bus companies are plying from Manila to Naga City which will take 12-14 hours. Then, have another transport from Naga City to Sabang Port. From Sabang Port to Guijalo Port will be by boat. Then, another 30-minute tricycle ride from Guijalo Port to Caramoan town.
2. Fly to Naga thru Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific. From Naga City is land transport to Sabang Port and then take a 2-hour boat to Guijalo Port and another 30-minute tricycle ride transport to Caramoan town.
3. Fly to Virac booking online at Trip.Com and take a 1-hour boat.
4. 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Legazpi City to Naga or Pili and take the same route like that of Options 1 and 2.

OTHER CONCERNS

For those DIY travelers, beware of dishonest local contacts and boat operators. In our second trip, the local contact decided to cancel our original accommodation reservation and they housed us into a small nipa/wooden house with only electric fans and infested with cockroaches because it was our local contact's house. Barely no plates, forks and spoons and we stand while eating. Just to learn that the local contact did not inform our Manila tour operator that we were booked to another house because he said that all accommodations are fully booked when the reservation was made earlier. Our boatman also did not give us the services for the agreed five-island hopping but only three. Once maybe a mistake but twice is already intentional.

SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF THE MOST HOLY ROSARY, MOTHER OF PEACE

Location: Caglago Mountain, Barangay Tabgon, Caramoan, Camarines Sur, Philippines
Date Opened to the Public – First Image: May 20, 1990
Date Opened to the Public – Second Image as Replacement: May 1, 2008
No. of Steps from base to the summit: 530
Descriptive Summary: This is a 26-foot image of the Blessed Virgin Mary currently named as the Shrine of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, the Mother of Peace. Records tell that its first image was badly damaged by super Typhoon Loleng in October 21, 1998 wherein partly its mantle was blown off and some fingers were lost. In 1999, it was also struck by a lightning which severely damaged it that its restoration may no longer practical. Thus, another image was constructed and was completed on May 1, 2008.

The imposing image of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary

Caramoan is known for its beautiful islands dotting the Maqueda Channel. Caramoan municipality is a peninsula which is a part of Bicol Region mainland.

Saint Michael the Archangel Parish in Caramoan town

You will find the people of Caramoan to be religious as a proof that its town’s parish church are always filled with church goers attending even a Saturday morning mass.

The municipal hall of Caramoan town

The town itself has imposing building structures and aside from its parish church, its municipal hall can also be a pride of the people of Caramoan as its design and structure looks new and palacial.

A green and refreshing countryside

Heading to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary boarding a chartered single motorcycle with a maximum of two passengers is quite rewarding as you see the charming countryside. The scent of a rice field is quite refreshing. The gentle blow of cool mountain breeze completes the package.

Fresh and abundant flowing water from a small dam

As I pass thru a bridge turned to a small dam, I can’t help but lift from the vehicle and feel the aura of being in a river where just like the place where I grew up, a river is the source of everything where mothers are in a long line washing their clothes while the kids are having a playful swim. Fathers are seen to fetch water and accompany their carabaos for fresh drink in the river.

The start of any pilgrim as he is challenged to complete 530 steps to the Grotto

The signage arc serves to be the jump-off point for pilgrims. If you plan to scale these concrete steps leading to the grotto, do bring water to hydrate in between your steps and a towel to wipe the sweat off. If you're going in the morning where I did, either wear a hat or a shawl because it will get very hot! The challenge is in the number of steps, not the steps themselves. The steps, while not equally-sized, are all cement, and there are railings to hold onto as well.

The scenic sunrise as taken just halfway to the grotto

As you climb higher on stairs, superb views of the Maqueda Channel will unfold to your very own eyes not to mention that sunrise magnify the beauty of the surroundings.

My last 30 steps to complete the scaling challenge

Being physically fit since I am a mountaineer was not at exactly a challenge. I did the climbing with ease and gusto. Honestly, I was so intoxicated of the beautiful nature that besieged me. It was great to be in this part of the Earth. Try it and you will be able to relate to my experience.

The waving symbolic religious flags welcome the pilgrims

Not yet on top of the Grotto, these waving flags would welcome you with all hospitality as if those big arms ready to embrace you with warmness.

Scenery taken as I reached the flatform of the Grotto

Reaching the Grotto is such a rewarding experience. It is like a feeling of a mountaineer reaching the summit of a mountain. But this one is reaching the arms of the Mama Mary figuratively.

A comparative scale in size of the Image of Virgin Mary to a human body size and height

After praying the Holy Rosary, I stayed a bit longer to feel the presence of the Holy Mother and to give my full veneration to Her.

As an additional background, the construction of the first structural image of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary began in 1989 under the leadership of St. Dominic of Guzman parish priest Rev. Fr. Felix F. Barella. During its construction, the people of Caramoan had to climb Mt. Caglago to bring the materials. It was completed the following year through foreign and local funding.

The second sculpture was built through Ben Niera who was commissioned by Rev. Msgr. Juan N. Buentiempo which was completed on May 1, 2008.

In May 2000, during the occasion of the Great Jubilee Year, the Shrine was declared as one of the pilgrimage sites in the Archdiocese of Caceres.

The two telecommunication towers dominate the Grotto

The place would really be a total sacred ground had it not with the presence of these two telecommunication towers. I find it difficult to capture a total picture of the image removing these structures as a part of the Grotto.

Pilgrims descending the Grotto

Descending the Grotto is easier compared to climbing it. For a pilgrim whose age and health is in the brink of severe condition, climbing is like fighting with cardiac assaults while descending is equally exhausting as you control your weight in every step you make.

HOLY MASS CELEBRATION IN THE SHRINE

The Eucharist is celebrated in this Shrine every first Sunday of the month and other occasions such as the anniversary of the foundation of the image (20th of May), Triduum, and feast of the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, Mother of Peace (4th of October).

HOW TO GET THERE

You may find this link useful Manila to Caramoan Tour in providing you with options on how to go to Caramoan town. From the town, you either hire a van or a single tricycle with maximum of two backride passengers. The round trip fare is negotiable but I paid P150 since the shrine is quite far from the town. The driver will wait for you from the jump-off point when you completely descended the shrine.

MY FIRST CARAMOAN GETAWAY: A BITTER EXPERIENCE

Municipality of Caramoan, Camarines Sur, Bicol Region, Philippines

I have read a lot of good reviews of Caramoan islands and so, two of my friends and I had planned to visit it. The date was for the period April 9-12, 2009. It materialized. But it turned out to be a disgusting experience that I will not forget in my whole life.

View of Lahos island taken from its rugged tall cliffs

It was a DIY and so we boarded a bus from Cubao to Naga City for 16 hours when ordinarily, it will only be 12.5 hours. From Naga City, we boarded another mini bus going to Sabang Port for a travel time of almost 2 hours costing P90. From Sabang Port, we took a big passenger boat going to Guijalo Port for 2 hours costing P110 per head. The boat operator required each passenger to register his name to the passengers' manifest. Upon entry to Guijalo Port, each one was charged to pay for P30 for the Environmental Fee. It was not the end yet because we have to take another a tricycle going to Caramoan town proper for 30 minutes. A special trip costs P300 but since it has a capacity of 6 then, each passenger in a non-chartered basis is only P50. As we were only three, we waited for another three, so that we will not pay for the other vacant 3 seats. We did not have an accommodation booking and we instructed the tricycle driver to bring us to Bikal port where boats for island hopping are available.

Approaching Lahos island at almost 11:30 A.M.

We were referred to a boat operator who is at her past 60's and haggled for the boat package at P1,800 for an overnight since it was already 10:30 A.M. We further negotiated that they can tour us around 2 islands and stay overnight for the third island. And from there, they can service other guests while they already dropped us to the last island destination. However, the old woman boat operator insisted that it is not there policy because they do not want to leave the guests unaccompanied by the boatmen. However, they insisted that the P1,800 rental is only good for one day which runs till 6:00 P.M. and they have to transport us back to the mainland. And so the deal was finalized.

Frolicking under the heat of the sun

The three of us, Rome Frias, Teresa Corpuz and I, happily boarded the boat and with high spirits we headed to Lahos island. The boat man assured us that they will stay closely with us and never leave us. We were even assured not to take our bags with food supplies from the boat because they are accessible anytime we need them.

My amazement of the beauty of Lahos Island never subsided even the searing heat of the sun was highly evident

I think we were given by our boatmen a maximum of 30 minutes to enjoy the island. In fact, I was able to climb the tall cliff limestone just to capture it on top.

I was almost in spell enjoying the beauty of the island

After 30 minutes, the boatmen reminded us to go on board the boat because we are going to the next island, which means that we can really hop into three islands as we had agreed.

An entry to the rocky and coral-filled Hunongan Cove

Upon entry to the cove at around 12:30 noon, which I am sure not part of the itinerary, the boat men informed us that we need to wait because they have to take something from Lahos which is just across. We were even told to disembark from the boat at the middle of open shore dotted with sharp corals and we could hardly walk.

The cove has no white sand to bask with and swim

Since they told us to wait for just a while, we did not bother to get our food. We waited in vain. But no boat had come for our rescue and so we consumed our time playing with the handful of starfish we picked from the shore. It was low tide and so there was nowhere to swim.

Enjoying the company of starfish on the shady part of the cove

We were hungry already but the cove has no locals where food supplies from makeshift stores can be bought. We did not have choice but to wait in vain. There was no sight of our boat from a distance.

Playing with the live starfish though we put them back to the water

Boredom and hunger had struck us three at the cove but we did not have choice but to wait and wait. High tide was starting to invade the beach line and slowly the corals were already covered with water.

Pictorials at the middle of extreme hunger where no drinking water is even available

At last! at around 6:00 P.M. our boat arrived just to pick us up. And the boat were loaded with some guests. The boatmen told us that they were the first to get the rental services and we were only accommodated. I was shouting on top of my voice even when we already boarded the boat heading to Bikal Port. The other passengers were just silent. I have forgotten that I was so hungry then and I got silent for the rest of the boat ride to reach Bikal port.

My hungry companions while approaching Bikal Port

Just when I got out of the boat at the port, I rushed to the store of the old woman who was the operator and on top of my voice, I burst out all my anger. But she only said to me, "Have you paid any centavo for the boat rental services? Then, why are you angry? But I answered her in a very strong voice, "You! You!!!!!! you ruined our well planned vacation which we planned for a year!" I created a commotion at Bikal Port and a crowd was starting to grow. My two companions were giving bodily and eye signals to me to stop but I was unstoppable and I decided to bring our case for a police blotter as some people there advised me to do this move. It was Good Friday then. A local brought us to a certain house to stay with for overnight since all accommodations were fully booked.

Caramoan Municipal Hall

At around 7:00 P.M., a police came to our accommodation to bring us to the police station. The whole clan of the boat operator were present in the police station and one of her children even introduced to us as a public school teacher. She further said that her mom was a former public teacher, too. I asked myself then, "Then, what kind of public servants are these people?" On the other hand, the drunk Chief of Police handled the negotiation was obviously not on our side, but I told his assistant that if he will not leave the room, I will file a complaint against him being drunk on duty. So, he was advised to just leave us and the negotiation started. The boat operator only have question repeatedly, "Did you pay us? Why are you putting us to extreme embarrassment?" I repeatedly told them, "Where in the Philippines will you pay a boat man in advance, I am a seasoned traveler and a travel blogger and I am used to this arrangement, service first before paying." I uttered those words not to brag but with the intention of letting them feel my message that "Hey! you can not just fool me! I know tour operations run." Finally, the police officers, settled the negotiation by asking us how much damage we want to charge the boat operator, but I said, not paying their poor and lousy services is enough.

The shrine of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, Queen of Peace

We woke up the following day early and were happy that our host was very kind to us and they did not charge us anything for our overnight stay. We were not even charge with the sumptuous dinner. But in return, we gave them all our food stuff that we have intended for a 3-day trip. That day, our only destination was the shrine of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary.

The scene when we alighted from the passenger boat at the Sabang Port

We used the same transportation mode in travelling back to Manila. Surprisingly, I was amazed when we alighted at Sabang Port since it was lowtide and our boat cannot dock at the port and so, all of us were carried like goods going to the port.
